my leather coral has a hole near the base of it and the tissue is really white and chafing... Could this be a parasite or could this be just normal for leather corals?

Does it move itself recently? Mostly like it is the part of the foot which was recently detached from the rock. If it is the case, nothing serious.

    it looks fine otherwise

it looks ok otherwise, it did go through a "shutdown" phase when it was all bent over then came back just as good as ever. I'm just going to see how it goes. Just seems weird to see a hole in the side like that.

It's possible that it's beginning to split. I have a finger leather that pouted for about a week and when it perked up I noticed a hole. Over the next couple weeks it slowly forked then split. My toadstool like yours has been pouting for a few days now too...hate it when they do that!lol

I respectfully disagree with it. Toadstool does not split like anemone unless you cut it. It pops babies from its foot. When it moves, a small piece of its foot get lose and a new coral grows from it.

my toadstool leather was getting eaten by something in my tank. one week I was gone and nothing got feed, came back home and the top of leather wasnt round it looked like cookie monster took a bite out of it. I decreased feeds lately and noticed another little bit was taken out of crown again.. I've only seen my emerald crabs on top of it at night, but dont know if its the crabs or fish eating it..

    just fyi
