Good point - my locally made skimmer is a needle wheel. I've been thinking about getting a larger pump for it - I'm happy with it so far, but I think it could be pulling a bit more gunk than what it does.

    Doc frag,

What is LPH? The unit I was shown is made of acrylic and it is round, the pump is an Eheim, but I didn't look at the specs. I know it is venturi.

The water volume involved will be about 20 to 25 for the main tank and 10 to 15 for sump. I know I should be concerned about how quickly this volume turns over and from reading one of my aquarium books I think I want this turnover to be about 5 times per hour, do you agree?

I am envisioning my sump to contain my skimmer, heater and some live rock, with my main goal to have more water.

Sorry I was so late in getting back to thread, but damn employer expected me to work! (The nerve) THanks to everybody for your replies.
