    Hi there,

I have been meaning to ask this question for a while now, but haven't got around to getting online.

Is it just me, or do you ya'll think that Saltwater fish have more personality and characteristics that Freshwater fish?

I mean, a saltwater fish will do something to show it's unhappy with the water conditions, or twitch its body to show dominance or host up an area of the tank, OR EVEN SLEEP ON ITS SIDE. However, freshwater fish just swim back and forth and when its time to sleep, they just lay motionless in the water.

I hope I don't get you guys thinking I'm crazy, but feel free to express your opinions!

    Thank You

For me fresh water fish do have lots of personality also, but no personality in fresh water community fish, but more aggressive fish like African chicleds or something spelt like that, and oscars have personality also.

Like they would grab a pebble with their mouth and spit it out, and eventually dig a hole and i don't know what they do with it, maybe it's their new fort or something.

Ya, clown fish looks pretty dull too. My old clown slept in the overflow intake in my biocube like it's a dead body or something, but I noticed it was sleeping, never ever ever went in the rocks even the first day I brought him here. Only cool thing he does is display him self, and host an anemone.

Freshwater people say the same thing about their fish. From the examples you have given about saltwater fish behaviors, I can tell you freshwater fish have there own respective ways of doing them.

I have been in both fresh and salt for a long time, IMO anyone who says one has more personality variation and the other is just cookie cutter fish doesn't know what they are talking about.

Every fish species is a cookie cutter fish, they all have their respective behaviors from how they evolved. People confuse these behaviors as making there fish have personality. It is true you may get one that acts different from the rest every once in a while on both sides but that isn't common place.

If you want to talk about variation of behaviors then I will say yes salt probably wins since it has 60% of all fish species.

+1 I have had freshwater tanks for years and attributed personality to many of the fish over the years. In many cases the behavior changes the closer to their natural habitat you can provide, and what you'll eventually realize is that what you call personality is just them performing some natural chore or behavior that's required in their day to day existence in the wild.
Doesn't make it any less fun to watch though :jester:
