    Iam getting a new Hamilton hood form a buddy for $100 but needs ballast and lamps ARO Electronic ballast or Icecap Electronic and 2 10k xm bulbs and 2 110vho but the Question is do you think i can put it 2" above the water. mabe 75 gallon tank and 48" hood

    iI wouldnt put it that close to the water ,any splashes the the bulbs will shatter.

    what wattage? heat transfer might be an issue

    If the sheild is going to be very close to the lamps you need to use tempered glass. Plastic will melt or at least discolor and regular glass with shatter if it gets splashed. If you install a couple of exhaust fans in the fixture there is a good chance you can have it very close to the water with no heat problems.
