I just built a hood for my 100 gal, my question is do I need to keep the lexan top on the tank or can it be taken off now? the hood was made out of 1x8 oak, so it is 7 1/4" above the top of the tank.

You don't want to completely cover the tank as you need the gas exchange... If you are referring to the clear sheet of Acrylic that fits the top of the tank, Id recommend removing it... Post up some pics of the new setup!

    Best of Luck

+1 on Whisky Tango Foxtrot for me - remove to help with C02 exhange

do you have any known jumpers - Wrasse, Gobies, anything that could end up high and dry on the floor ? if so some people use egg crate to cover tank as this still helps gas exchange , does not restirct the light as a cover would and can help to minimise the risk of fish getting air borne ( Yep sometimes fish still get clean through the gaps though)

TO add with Steve, There is also a thin sheet of material that can be placed on the egg crate that doesn't restrict light, but unfortunately I don't recall the name... Im sure someone can elaborate...
