Freckled Hawkfish will eat smaller fish and crustaceans. Coral Hogfish can be aggressive. Snowflake Eels will need a tightly sealed lid, or they will jump. Klunzinger's Wrasses will eat crustaceans and can be aggressive, and also need tanks that are 125 gallons or larger, unless you plan to temporarily keep it. Indigo Hamlet's will eat crustaceans. Bannerfish and Saddleback Butterflyfish need tanks that are 125 gallons or larger.

Just some food for thought :)

And also SFE can get outright mean as they mature. Search and you will see many needing to re-home them after a few years.

Id say thats true. Just today i watched a video of a guy feeding his barracuda and his snowflake was chasing a feeder goldfish that was way too big for him to eat. But he was definitely going to try.

I had a snowflake before and it was the king of the tank in my eyes. My favorite fish by far, and I miss having one, but I'm going nano this time. More personality than I've ever seen in any other fish by far. But anyway, mine was really docile and ate out of my hand. Was 6" when I bought him, over 14" and fat as my thumb in a year and a half when I sold him to a specialty pet store in Salem Ma because he got too big for my tank, but he lived peacefully for a year and a half with 2 peppermint shrimp, never touched them, and a dwarf lionfish, tomato clown, royal gramma, a hippo tang, and three green chromis. Ok, well he got along with 2 of the chromis, and one of them he got along a little too well with, but boy was he was a sated happy eel for a week after that snack. He had a guilty look on his face, I could tell he felt badly for eating Larry. Or was it Curly? I always hand fed Eelio (yah, that's right, I named my SFE Eelio) freeze dried krill and occasionally some nice fish chunks from the store. Best fish I had, and the tight lid is a must! BIGTIME ESCAPE ARTIST! Thought my top was secure and all holes were either covered, or too small, then one day I saw mine crawling on the floor, out of the tank for who knows how long. I've heard they can slither for a while on the floor. He was a trooper though, went right back in and lived on.

My 2 cents when it comes to Snowflake morays:

    Tight lid is a must!

Kept my water an inch lower after the escape and it seemed to help with him getting his head started into a hole.

Made sure my rocks had a solid on glass foundation before i put the sand in. The eels like to burrow alot and throw sand like you wouldn't believe, and can undermine rocks if they're just sitting on the sandbed.

Don't feed them goldfish or freshwater feeder fish. I did a few times, was kinda fun to watch honestly, sorry if that's sick (I can hear Elton John singing "The Circle of Life" in the background) but I've heard the eel can get liver diseases from that. I had a Picasso triggerfish in the tank for a while with the eel, and put small feeder fish in the tank, he would chase them around and nip at their tails until they couldn't go anywhere quickly anymore, then he would go for the eyes, then the guts, the tender bits, then the dead fish would fall to the bottom, Eelio would come out and grab the leftovers and scamper back to his cave.

Hope some of this helps, and I say get the smallest snowflake you can get, and build your hole tank around it. Only get fish that will work with the SFE, and feed it regularly, and it will be the rockstar of the tank. Every friend that came over and saw mine was amazed at it.

Excellent info! I am doing a semi-predator tank soon with a dwarf lion and was hoping a smaller eel. But as mentioned have heard they can get very mean when matured. How long did you have him for?

About a year and a half. They outgrow small tanks pretty quickly. I fed mine often which probably helped in him mostly leaving his tankmates alone.

They mostly come out at night ... mostly.
