Here is a quick formula for calculating the exact amount of water in your Sump or Fuge. I was curious about the actual water volume in my sump I bought what was called as a 25 Gallon sump but here is the tale of the tape. This will work for any rectangular sump or Tank.

First Multiply the total Water Volume not sump volume Actually measure the water level

My Sump is 30 inches long by 12 inches deep and my water is 9 inches high normally because of my skimmer output.

So I have 30x12x9 = 3240 cubic inches of water

Take your cubic inches of water and divide by 231 (231 cubic inches of water to 1 US gallon)

3240/231= 14.03 actual gallons in my 25 gallon sump the rest of the space prevents overflow in case of a power failure and return pump goes out.

    I just found this interesting . 8)
