I know what I know also I'm hard to impress and even harder to fool and if you go back to any of my old sites I hung at you'll find I say the same thing today as then.. And as for killing off your stuff look these guys get average people like us to risk out own systems for their next book or research.. And when their little play tanks fail they have all the excuses in the world . One had a Larger tank once 700 gal plus and when his DSB rolled up and killed it oh man the reasons where all over the place even got to someone added freshwater while I was out They broke in and did the deed and slipped out .. Talk about a high opinion of self worth LOL Or maybe someone did ? to hide up something ?

All I can speak from is what I do and do and do and do and its never failed myself or others who applied it.. I may be considered Old school but is not more old school then plants and bacteria ? What I know is known by any country kid raised working a farm and around ponds and animals all their lives .. Bacteria has been doing what they do since day one and there is no new water just bacteria cleaned water and plants like all living things need food and produce waste they have to rest :) But I have never had a single fuge to ever go asexual.. nor has anyone I know of for that matter that gave them down time.

Like with Producing phytoplankton's many tried to push them 24 /7 for faster profits but give them 6 hrs a day for rest they offer more nutrition and are far more stable cultures . They will die also But old school told me they do just what plants do they up take nitrate , nitrites and ammonia and co'2 in the day and release oxygen at night as their waste product . Look I'm not telling anyone to change anything but go do some research and you will find when the Caulerpa panic started in the mid 90's some smart guys had read 24/7 is better so light them up.. I simple say what I do and do what I say and I have few problems .. Take it or leave it I form my own opinions and see whats works If does work well I keep with it if not it goes into wastebasket :) and I move on . This hobby and many of its hobbyist has been around longer them most of todays new Guru's trying to ride the $$$ wave.

Tangster, for the macro algae that you run in the refugum, does it look like this?

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm235/grubbsj/DSC00178.jpg (sorry about the dirty glass, I don't keep the refugum side glass cleaned, as it is a plastic tank)

Some of the roots on these are down in the sand bed others (as you can see) are out in the water column.

I have a first cousin or 1/2 brother to that species Halophila ovalis grows in patches like will cover the bottom its a good plant we have tons of that at the shop but my main algae used in any refugium I or anyone whoI have sent the plants to run is these simple old types listed below. Its never caused my tanks or corals any problems and I have read and heard the horror stories.

    simple old feather Caulerpa sertularioides

and grape or what I call grape Caulerpa bikinensis
