Brown algae is tough to deal with. Some of the things you can do to keep it under control is:
Your tank might not be fully cycled or a new piece of live rock is introduced and was not cured.
Do not overfeed your fish. Cut back and you'll see a difference.
Make sure your filtration system is clean. Improper flow can be a problem.
Hermit crabs by night and gobbies by day will eat at the algae.
Sand sifter starfish are good algae eaters.
    Check nitrates and phosphates.
Make sure your tank is not near a window.
I stir the sand periodically to let the system clean up some of it.

These are just ideas I use to keep it under control. I hope this helps.

IMO low nitrates and a phosphate reactor with quality media is the key. I refugium also works woner sif you have the capacity to have one.

thanks for the info i really didnt know it could be bad to have my tank by a window. i been running my tank for over 2 years and just about a month or two my soft corals just started shrinking and brown algae is growing alot with bubbles in the sand but i tested phosphate (0) nitrate (10) nitrite (0) calcium (450) ph (8.2) alkalinity (2.8) i have 3 colt corals why do you think theyr shinking and mushrooms turned white and other corals died, do you think i should add iodine? because i've never used it before.
