Most of the time I get the best deals from trading. On the net or in the lfs something will cost X amount, but if you find the right person with a lot of something you can get a really good trade at times.

And SoCal Edison's residential tiered system of electricity billing will really get you in the end. The more you use the more it cost you per killawatt. While others arount the country will pay $0.04 - $0.13 per killawatt, you my friend will be paying upwards of $0.40 per killawatt. Welcome to California! It can be done however you will need to take energy efficiency very seriously.

why not try and get a job at a LFS and you'll get the best of both worlds, make $, be around the hobby & I'm sure you can then just give them your paychecks for corals :)

Why not load up on LEDs? Just get a crap load over a tank to save electricity. lol I agree that you won't be making much from selling coral, but I think the main reason to sell coral is either because it is growing like no tomorrow and taking over and you want to make some money back that will go into more livestock.

Like was said, it's near impossible for the average hobbyist to make money from growing coral, but if your heart is set on it, you need to pick the right ones from the start. You need something that will be fast growing, doesn't need a lot of light and isn't overly demanding. Zoas are probably the best solution and the market is so hot on all their variations that your markup can be pretty insane. When you pick the color morphs that you are going to grow frag and sell, don't look at your cost to buy them. Only look at what the locals are willing to pay for it. The higher this number is the higher it will be for you to buy your stock, but also the faster you will recoup that cost and start making money. Never buy a zoa to grow out that has no name associated with it and before buying always research to confirm that the name indeed fits what your getting. As sad as it is, the catchy little names sell the corals, not the corals themselves.

I agree..I think my frags pay for anything really new in my 29g. Your not going to be able to make a living by it, but you could maybe get a tank of gas out of frags every month depending on type of corals and growth rate of them.

I sell frags every other month out of GSP and kenya and xenia. Basicaly I have another grand of coral frags to sale before ive payed off my biocube :cheesy: I would say once you get your tank to where you are just buying corals and fish every now and then, you can sell a few frags of your quick growing corals and buy a nice coral with that..Thats what i do.
