There are many threads about what people like most about reefs and aquariums but I have not seen any on how you got into reefing! So here I am... I decided to make one. I got into reefing after a great trip to Australia! I saw the Great Barrier Reef and it really inspired me!! How about you?

Studied biology my whole life. Watched videos on corals, sea life and other marine creatures. LOVED LOVED IT. I guess I tried to take any class I could that had marine parts to it. It burned deep inside until I could get it started. =D

JJL, I am extremely jealous of you. :( :D

I got into the bobby a few years back. I think the number 1 thing got me into it was the wide variety of creatures. The Virginia Marine Science Museum was also a crazy adventure whenever I went, as a little kid...probably my favorite place to go!

Our world's oceans are probably the one thing on it, we know the least about. It's cool to be able to have a piece of it and know how to care for it, myself.

...looking to go to school in Australia for marine biology.

Local LFS as a FW aquarist- took me a few years-then jump, why? because I got a smoking deal on a 160 gallon acrylic tank, built the stand, then the canopy, then filled her up with salt water- been hooked ever since.

To me, it is the creator's way of reminding us that works of art- true works of art, can only be alive, we have been employed to it's proper care, and thus, we view the best works or art on planet earth- of the planet it self.

We really do not create anything, we simply utilize what we have available - this, so that we can do...something- what that is depends upon your motivation.

Ah, I also remember going into the pet store when I was REALLY little and the coral is the one thing I remember most. I loved and and was very confused by it, as the same time. How can a plant move(soft coral - I didn't know at the time)? So what was it - "a plant or an animal?"

My Dad was into Fish only tanks when I was real young, mostly clown triggers and lions. Then he was out out for years we had freshwater and reptiles and stuff. We always watched the coral reef shows on tv and Imax and about 3 years ago after my Mom passed away we brought up the idea and went for it. It has really helped bring us closer and we get to share our different ideas and thoughts about the hobby with each other. We have gone to a MACNA event and local reef frag swaps and met lots of great people so I'm glad we got started again.

Just always liked fish, the ocean and biology. In college, I was away from the ocean for the first time and I guess I missed it. Went out and bought a 55g and that's that. Ironically, if I hadn't I might not need the extra income my degrees provide

I wish my family were that close. All be it my brother is really garnering an intrest- I have given him all he needs to do a proper set up. Very soon, when his remodel is finished, perhaps he will see what I see.

When I was little, I loved marine biology. I used to be an encyclopedia on sharks. I always wanted an aquarium, but I sent my summers at the lake (always in the water) so we couldnt take care of one and never got one.

I decided that I couldn't make money in the field of marine biology, and I didnt want to constantly be traveling, so i went a different direction. In college I finally got my scuba cert, and still loved the ocean. Finally, my girlfriend had an aquarium that she hadn't used in a while. I set up a little guppy tank, which I to this day still enjoy, but it wasnt enough for me.

So now I am currently cycling my sw tank, and am eager to jump into the reef world!
