I wanted to know how do I culture copepods WITHOUT the use of a sump/refugium (since I do not have either).

    Thanks

I've been culturing amphipods in a seperate tank. Easier than brine shrimp IMO. Stock the tank and feed em'.

you have to make some area where the fish cant get into, like a small pile of rocks, or a breeder net with some cheato

I have checked that out before, but I wanted some input from fellow 3reefers that are actually doing it.

Missionsix66 can you give me moreinput on what exactly you are doing(what food do you give, do u use and airstone, a heater?)

Amphipods are a bit different than copepods. I don't run lights, I feed them shrimp, I don't do water changes, no airstone. It's my old fowlr eclipse29. It's been empty for a while and I couldn't bring myself to tearing it down and wasting pods. Especially since I have a mandarin and leopord housed together in my reef. I really don't do much except siphon them out and add to my fuge every once in a while.

i bought 5,000 copepods from ebay ....added to my tank at night along with cheato. turn the light off for 2 days.

hide the cheato in between rocks.

for the next 4 weeks leave the light off for 18 hous a day...every other day

your tank will be infested with them...given that u have plenty of live rock

also add some live phytoplankton everyday....u can get it at local fish store

i have copepods comin out of my ears

I have I think a 10 gallon sittign around which I might use. I was thinking of adding maybe a heater and an airstone. I was thinkg of maybe separating this 10 gallon in 5 gallos sections or maybe 2.5 gallons sections????

    or

I also have some(4) empty soda/juice bottles which I can open a hole in their caps and insert some air into them. So I was thinking when I have enough I would try to catch all the pods from one of the bottles and place it into my tank, then get anotehr bottle andplace halfof that into the empty bottle and keep growing those. i would thendo thesame thing with the otehr 2 bottles as the oens that are culturing are doing their thing to let themreplenish????

If you have a tall overflow and use a stand pipe to feed sump, you will have several gallons of water and no light (in the overflowarea) , this will naturally be a good area to grow them. (assuming that you have removed Bio Balls, etc..).
