i had a pair of o clowns for a little over a year. A couple of weeks ago the female disapeared. eventually, i would like to replace her but am not sure of the best way to go about it. I know that clowns can change their sex but have heard that this won't happen after they mature. I have also heard that a dominant male amongst a group of males will become female even after maturity. Not sure what is true. Do I need to add a female or can I just add another o clown and let the dominant become female. Also, if i need to add a female, how do i make sure that the fish i get is a female.

It really all depends on how long the clownfish is left alone. I would say your best bet is getting a young smaller clown that will become the submissive clown.

Correct: If the dominate females dies the dominate male will become a female. Time frame variable.

I think if you put one in right away, the fish you have right now could try to prove dominance to the new fish, causing a battle for dominance or stressing the new fish out. Of course, maybe the fish you have is an angel, and it won't do that, but you really never know... I don't think there's a cut and dry answer.

Do you think it would be cruel to leave him by his lonesome after all this time with a partner?
