I have got my 200 gallon bow front acrylic reef tank filled with water. I have turned on the two pumps in the sump and now the overflow is making a lot of noise. (play attached mp3 file if you wish). How do I fix the noise? The overflow is plumbed into the sump with flexible gray hoses. So the gray hoses/lines flex up and down some. Should I go with hard PVC piping? I was told that makes maintenance a pain when the sump needs cleaned.

I can't play the sound on a government computer but if it sounds like gurgling then what you do is place a piece of airline tubing down the hole of the drain of the overflow. adjust the airline up or down until the noise stops. Most overflow boxes have a small hole on top of the drain plug that allow you to do this.

Some even come with a hard piece of tubing and an o-ring to help the gurgling noise.

I would leave the flex tubing on there, better than hard plumbing in my opinion. Its what I have on my 30 gallon/.

Are you using a low-noise standpipe such as a Durso or Stockman modification?

If not, that's a good place to begin. If you are using a Durso, it's not properly vented, and needs to be tuned.

Tell us about your system or post a couple of pics.

I agree...definitely stay with the hose on the drain.

Do you have any photos of your standpipes and plumbing, it would be a big help.

Yes, that gurgling noise is because of the mix of water and air going down your drain.

Agreed photos of pluming would help.

I had this issue and addressed it with a Hofer Gurgle Buster for my drain and it works like a champ. Super easy to do. During the day, the fans on the T5s are louder than the drain. I just sounds like water going down a drain.

Just needed about $4 in plumbing parts and a dremel.
