I know this is a really stupid questin but i just fired up my new 75 gal with a 30 gal sump. I have a marineland tank with corner overflow all the return and drain fittings and pipe came together with tank. So my proplem is on the return side of the pipe the hole for the syphon is half way in and out of water so its really loud and is kinda misting water in the air. I have a mag 9.5 pump with shut off valves on drain and return. I just need to raise the water a half inch or so. Sorry for a stupid question. Thanks mike

If it's drilled, then you can't raise the overflow, an advantage to HOB overflows. You will have to lengthen the pipe or rearrange it so that it's farther under water. (Sounds like a poor design on behalf of whomever you got it from.) You can lower the water level in the tank more so that the entire pipe is exposed, if it has a female slip fit, then you can buy an adaptor that goes from that to a threaded fitting and buy some of that flexible hose the just aim it lower. Or you can plump it deeper using regular pipe and fittings.

Is the overflow piping the kind that is adjustable? Mine is and I can raise the level a little bit but the pipes stick up. Can you post a pic?

Dont use a check valve. It will fail eventually. I do not have a hole in mine I just have one of them (I have 4 returns) adjusted so it will break syphon as soon as pump shuts down. I had a spray bar on my last tank and I drilled a small hole right under the water line on the spray bar to do the same thing.
