How do you get your tank crystal clear?

I know people use filter socks in their sumps, but in my case it's a little different.

I have a 60 long, with now sump. I'm running a CPR bak pak skimmer and and Emperor 400 PF. I'm not running the Emperor anymore because of nitrate build up, but when it was running in my tank, it kept it pretty clear. But now that I only have my Skimmer running, I noticed the water isn't as clear anymore.

Do you guys know any methods to keep your tank clear? Or will I have to just run my PF once a week?

The reason I dont have a sump is due from insufficient space, so there's no chance for me to go that route.

    Thanks in advanced

Have you tried running carbon? What about water changes?

Should I put a carbon bag in my skimmer?

I do 10% weekly water changes.

I have a 46 bow and I have a Aqua C Remora Skimmer and a hang on Back Aquaclear 50 and have ChemiPure Elite inside(Charcoal and phosphate remover). Never have nitrates. I know Canister filters trap nitrates but HOB filters shouldn't

I have never used the Emperor but if you use carron you have to use a Feric Oxide Phosphate remover like Chemipure Elite(has both inside) or Phosban or

The carbon bag would go into the filtration system you have running. Some put them into filter socks, but the water tends to run around them rather than through them. But the HOB filtration system or canister FS is what is used most.

Most people that run ozone claim that it clears the water up nicely. However, your tank should be about a year old before doing this.

Also, a better skimmer may be the answer. I have heard a few people swear by CPR skimmers, but I have heard more swear at it. Two good HOB skimmers are the AquaC Remora and the Octopus BH-100F. If you want to go top end, the Deltec MC500 or the MCE600 are great choices. That would clear your water somewhat.

Their are a couple liquid phosphate removers that are supposed to be good. You only need a cup max of the stuff.
Also clean out the Emperor then add the media. Phosban by Two Little Fishies is good stuff and add some good carbon with it

    Not in the skimmer,

You can put a bag of carbon, or Chemi pure anywhere that has water flowing through it constantly...Keeps my tank clear as heck...

Sump would be a great place as it may be unsightly...but I wonder if you were to put it in your filter, if it's a canister, if that would help??? Maybe someone else can chime in...

In general canister filters cause a build up of nitrates usually from lack of cleaning it
