I read healthy xenia shouls look like your hands with constant open close motions. I don't see that but only see them swaying. How do I know for sure if they're dead or alive?

We definately need to see a pic. If they are in a high flow area, sometimes it's hard to see if they are pulsing. As long as they're not melting, and they are open and look kinda like feathers they're fine. They will ball up and close periodically. Picture

xenia will literally melt and dissolve away. If they were dead, you wouldn't see them

I've read that they won't pulse in some tanks.

I can tell you that my first attempt with Xenia failed and they died.

    First they stopped pulsing.

Then they began to shrink. Lots of polyps simply remained closed.

Over the corse of a month or two they kept shrinking and shrinking until they just disapeared never to be seen again.

Mine will go through periods where they don't appear to pulse at all, and then start pulsing like crazy.
