i have a sump that came with my 240gal and i am not sure on a few things about it,, it is my first filter of this style, it is about a 40gal size, it has a built in skimmer, and a built in refugium.. my question is i cleaned it all up yesterday and noticed that the refugium does not go to the bottome of the tank, but comes to a rounded point. the pump leads to the point with a 1/2 tube that goes across the bottom (inside the refugium area) with prob 1/4" or less holes in it,, they had gravel on top, prob 4 or 5", and the pump pumps water up through the gravel, and then over flows to the outher parts of the filter system. does this sound like a good system or has anyone seen anything like it? and a nother question is ive heard both opinions on bio balls ,, what are some of the goods and bads of them?? or they worth using?? it has prod. a few hundred of them for it.. thanks for the info

Most people will tell you that bioballs can work, but are a lot of work.

As for your other questions - it would help a lot if you could just post a few pics for us to visualize what is going on with your sump.

here is the filter,, the refugium is on the left of the bio balls. the tube at the bottome is where the pump runs up throught the gravel then overflows to the bio balls. The filter is made by Munsch Designs,, has anyone heard of them??

Haven't heard of them, but it looks like a solid filter. I would take out those bio-balls and replace them with some live rock rubble.
