If your still cycling, you dont need to test for Alk/Dkh, Cal or even PH. The only three elements that you should worry about is Nh3, No2 and No3 while your cycling. If you plan on having a reef tank, then worry about Cal, Alk/Dkh and Mag. Luna

Don't worry about it right now. You're cycling. Focus on that for now. I was just pointing out what I saw for your future plans on what to do.

NO WATER CHANGES is absolutely correct.

    And phosphates ;)

But worry about that later. For now, it's still fine to test as you can see what your tank is doing and you'll be able to log it for future reference.

Note: not sure if this was talked about in another thread (I respond to a lot of them) but none of those denizens of the deep should have been in the tank until at least 6-8 weeks and some not even then.

I agree with unclejed. It takes patience to make a good tank if you go and spend mucho money on fish before the cycle your probably gonna end of losing your money.. My tank is still in the cycle but all I have added are 2 damsels because there tough fish(and cheap) then when your cycle is done then start adding different fish.. but if you add buffer read the directions!! dont put it in your tank directly because you will burn your fish.. Your supposed to add it into a cup and let it dissolve.. or and i recommend doing the other one first but you can also add it into the back of your filter (behind the blue thing) and as it dissolves it will go into your tank but like i said do the cup and only do the second one if its an emergency and you have no cups lol!!

I only have the 1 damsel ,6 snails and 2 hermit crabs all doing fine. Not planning on any thing else till the water is cycled.

I do have future plans for a reef tank. I just want to get used to using the test and know what to look for and what to do ? I will take my time before I start adding expensive coral or expensive fish. Thank you everyone for your input.
