How does this RO/DI system layout look?

Well for what its worth ? that horizontal D.I is just a waste of space use it till exhausted then just toss it out and go with the add on vertical units I see there in the picture. As for the booster pump it will actually decrease the efficiency in that it will decreased the rejection rates as the higher pressures will only force more through the membrane . if you have 45 to 60 PSI in your home then thats all you need . Now the argument of will warmer summer time water Vs Colder winter time water , Yes will warmer water will open the pores and the cooler winter water will close the pores like with out skin . If its efficiency then you need to cool or heat the source water to 72F and about 60 PSI to get what the books say is peak efficiency. I simply would employ the properly sized or matched Capillary flow restrict or to compensate for water temps to the membrane. and be done with it . If its waste water that concerns you then look into a Kold Sterile better water and faster water and no waste water..

The two horizontal filter stages are both RO membranes, the waste from the first passes through the second before going to the drain, the DI in the system is vertical, the image only shows a single DI stage.

The waste water doesn't concern me too much, it will most likely be reclaimed for the garden, but if there is an option for a RO system that uses less water then I will spend a little more for that.

From trying to read up on the Kold Steril system, it looks like I would still need to add a DI stage afterwards to get TDS down to 0? As it is aimed at filtering bio stuff out of the water and not as much of filtering out the metals. Several threads on different boards mentioned that they were still seeing PO4 in the Kold Steril filtered water.

    Update: System is installed

Got the system installed last night and just finished up my first water change with it. The output rate is pretty good as the unit will pump out 150 gpd between the dual ro stages. Getting about 1.5 gal waste to 1 gal output.

Why did you get the pump? You dont have enough pressure in your house? The bottom two canisters are DI? Luna

Yea, because the water needs to go through two RO's you need at least 65 psi, my house only had 60 psi. I am running the system at almost 90 psi and that helps to get a better clean : waste water ratio. The pump also allowed for the addition of the auto flush valve, that way I won't need to remember to flush the membranes, it will do it all for me.

Bottom two are the DI, I figured I would be changing them more often then the other filters so I put them at a lower level for convenience.

Wow dude, that is sweet. I am impressed. Now, this question is horribly simplistic and I am embarrassed to ask, but WTH, do you just have a garbage can underneath that collecting the water and the waste going into the city sewer (or drain field)? I am clueless. And if you do have a garbage can set up, how do you prevent overflow? Or do you just run it when you are home and keep a watch on it?

One of these days I am going to get one of these........yet another expense for my wife to roll her eyes at!

yea, at the moment since the new washroom is still under construction. I have a 20 gal for the RODI water, it has a float valve and a gate valve. And for the waste I have a 44 gal with a dolly so I can move it out to the garden and use the water on the plants.

So far I have just been doing 20 gal batches, I will open the gate valve and the system starts up, once the 20 gal is full the float valve will shut the water off until I make it out there again to turn the gate valve off.

Long term I will have the system plumbed to the tank more directly, but I have a long list of other things that are ahead of it.

So far my wife has been okay with the expenses, I sometimes remind her that it was her idea to get the larger tank.

Maybe we should coin a phrase to capture the dynamic of exactly what's going on here.

I think this could be accurately labeled, "Reef-keepers manipulative syndrome."

One day if it becomes standard vernacular, I think the Oxford would define it as . . .

"Of or pertaining to the defensive retort when challenged with expenses or time taken regarding the maintenance, upkeep, or constant necessary purchases mandatory in the husbandry of the reef tank."
