Lighting fans are always the key. Good air flow on your lights will bleed off tons of heat.

I'm curious....were these tests done in aquariums or in the ocean? I ask because, as you know, what "works" in the ocean won't necessarily "work" in a captive environment.

I'm not surprised.. unfortunately I tested the limits. I ran my tank at 85-87 for months and didn't know it was that hot because the thermometer was 10 degrees off.

I had some mysterious deaths but, most things lived. When it started warming up and I bumped the heater up to what I thought was 79-80 is when everything started to die. Actual temp was 89-91. I lost an anthias but all fish lived..inverts lived except my cleaner shrimp and one blue leg hermit.
Never ever trust a digital thermometer.( Or any single thermometer for that matter)
Always have several thermometers to cross check.
And I would say 83 would be the absolute max to be safe.
Edit: I run mine at 79-80

We run our chillers at 81. You can try having your lights off during the hot part of day and have them kick on when its cooling. My tank pc's come on at 3 and mh's at 6 but we are late nighters.

Ouch. Yeah, we always double check our temps with a floating thermometer as well as a digital.

Did you notice any excessive water evaporation whilst you were running in the high 80's into 90? 90 degree water will humidify pretty quickly in cooler rooms and at night. I almost feel that I could look at a tank and see the high temp. Definitely by feel.

I didn't see anyone mention seasonal temps. Some keep temps lower during the summer months and higher in winter months. The reason being, there is room for temp fluctuation during power outages etc. Power goes out during the summer and kills your fans/ac, then a 1-2 degree raise, is trouble when you are already at 81-82. Keeping the tank a little warmer during winter months keeps a warm buffer. I keep mine 82 year round.

chillers can be expensive---alternative would be to use a 1 pint plastic bottle, fill with water and freeze. then simply put in sump. this is what i do with my 75 gal. the 1 pint bottle drops my temp 2 degrees. so when i get to 80-81 deg. i grab my chiller from my freezer and drop it in. Wham-o back to 78-79 deg. Happy reefing
