So I lost the house AC for two days and the tank rose to 82.x
I did what I could to keep it down.

    Two questions.

1.) How hot is too hot and for how long ?
2.) I turned off the lights for a day to help, is this an advisable step ?

    Cheers

BTW, Back to 79' right now..

above 86 is considered dangerous in the wild. we like to keep it below 82.

The reason is not because of cooking stuff but actually because of suffocation. the warmer water is, the less oxygen it has in solution. if you are running warm make sure you have ample flow and some surface agitation...
a quick fix to lower the temp is to place a little fan blowing across the surface of the water. it dissipates heat from your lights and encourages diffusion of oxygen. however, it will increase evaporation.

    Thanks all,
Much hotter that I was thinking..

I rtun air stones in the sump for extra O2 and a fan blowing on the tank, but not directly accross the top persay.

Pretty good surface agitation with Koralia's running.

    Cheers

I keep mine at 81 as well. 79 is a tad too low for most tropical species.

I would not sweat anything under 84 degrees. Over that, I will break out fans, but I don't have that issue since my tank is in the basement.

I keep my tank at 79 and sometimes it gets to 80-81 then fans kick on.

To cool your tank you can freeze some 2 liter bottles with water and place them in the tank.....I did that a couple times.

But the fans work best...cools the tank right down.

Most critters can handle as low as 72 no problem, but I can tell you that corals grow a lot faster at 80-81 than they do at 76.

If my temp hits 84 I grab a few bottles with frozen water and throw them in my sump. I feel that anything over 84 is to high and corals start melting.

Corals can usually take close to 90 or a little more before dieing.
