That is just not how the body works. It uses what you put in. Weigh yourself then drink a known weight of water. When done weigh yourself again and you will not weigh the total of the two. It does seem like you should but because of chemistry that is just not how it works.

Damon i did some research after your question It seems this would be a good question for your doctor it is interesting how that can happen..... i did however find a web site for the national kidney foundation where you can actually ask a Dr that question. Unless there is a Doctor in the house here......

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If they are using digital scales and a different one for weigh in and out the difference could be found there.

Also if your dialysis takes awhile, a couple hours you loose some water ( fluid ).

Worked in hospitals for 15years and digital scales need to be calibrated much more often than it gets done. Plus the dialysis nurse may not be right on regarding her fluid measurement. On top of that they are flushing the dialysis shunt or catheter and leaving some solution in place to avoid clotting. As your know dialysis is complicated stuff.

all very good questions, and I'm sure my doctor would like to know almost as much as I would. This is not a problem, so it's not really too much of a concern, but more of an interesting anomaly.I've been on dialysis for 2 years now and this is something that is consistent. I'm very active in my treatment, so I'll have them recalibrate the scale right in front of me (I even weighed the calibration weight to make sure it was not off). You could guys could be right about the sweet, but I would think that I would be all wet if I sweated out .4 letters. I agree that bodies can do some interesting things and I guess this is just one of those cases, but I still don't get it. I guess there is just something in the math side of it that I'm not seeing. Some variable that I don't know what it is.

You have to account: Sweating, exhaling(water vaper), membranes, your eyes (water vaper again). There are many things that can cause you to lose water.

ya, it's just hard to think that it could be that much, but the air in the clinic is very dry so that might be a part of it.
I just noticed your pet list, I'm jealous or your dachshunds, I've always wanted one.

Maybe you were leaning to one direction more than another. On digital scales it can throw it off with the slightest weight transfer to one direction or another. I've had it happen to me before and i had to be perfectly straight for the scale to read right.

You need one! I wasn't a dog person until I got my first one. He was abused so I guess I got more of an experience than most do but now I have 3 and a foster! There's a pic on my profile if you want to see my furkids :)

Science can be a cruel mistress so you never know what can happen. You would be amazed on how much water you can loose in a day by exhaling alone!

Damon, i asked my wife about your "loss" she is a nephrologist. (mind you i don't have anything to do with the medical field so somethings may be lost in translation)
she said that while doing dialysis there is some margin of error in giving/taking fluids and .5kg is a very acceptable margin. she added that very few people take on fluids rather than losing. and if you add other factors like what your body can consume and other stuff that i really did not understand related to the mechanics of dialysis.

are you a hemodialysis patient? or a peritoneal dialysis patient?
i would suggest for you to monitor which machine you use when you see any discrepancy with your post weight. most of the time it is the dialysis machine which is at fault. if you see the difference all the time with the same dialysis machine then i would say that it is not well calibrated. there will always be a discrepancy with what the machine pulls (fluid) of about .3 - .5.
but reading you post you said they give you .9 litters of saline? most dialysis unit will only rinse back saline of about .5 and by then your extracorporeal (lines) will be clear of blood. if they give you .9 then your lines should have no trace of any blood and should be really clear like water on the lines and no trace of any blood.
    just a thought.
