Is there a guide that tells how long you should run lights?

Depends on what you are keeping and what type of lighting you are using.

If you give us some specs we can recommend a time period for you.

No real guide, just your pocketbook, algae problems or preference.

Most corals we buy are from the tropics. The length of day is around 12 hours so most run their blue lights, dawn/dusk, 12 hours and their white, daylight, 10 hours.

I would really like to see someone do a experiment with the length of lighting.

The way I understand it is photosynthesis slows down after a while of being in light, and it will speed up the longer the coral is with held from light. I wonder what would have with a schedule of 3 hours on 1 hour off.

Anywhere from 8 to 12 hours. I'd stick with 8, since that gives algae less time to grow.
