I'm one of the odd ones I guess never did Fresh. Did have a couple of turtles for about 10 years. They now live at a zoo back in my home town.

But Ive been in Reef tanks for just under 8 years now

Wow! What a range of answers!
I'm also one of those who had to use my fingers and toes to count the years. I started a freshwater tank in 1970, when I was in the 5th grade. I had a saltwater tank for over 2 years in the late 80s, and started it up again in 2005.
With college, kids and military service forcing breaks in my hobby, I have had 18 years of freshwater and almost 5 years of saltwater experience.

I'm very happy I ended up doing salt. With freshwater I was always adding something to my tank (chemical wise). Never finding I guess what you could call, A sweet spot... But then I didn't have a honest lfs either.

Ive been in this hobby since I was born more or less. I remember back when I was like 4, I use to love the taste of pepto and figured our fishies would too, so I dumped the bottle in tank... My dad was a under water welder(built oil rigs back in the 70s), he was into fishies and he always had fish, and one of my bro's has always had an aquarium. I guess it just runs in the family, haha. Ive been into saltwater for about 15yrs or so.

    3 years fresh (1971-1974).....then I discovered girls!

Took a break (1974-2004).....while discovering girls I met my better half. During this time my brother had started a 30g salt. First time I saw the tank I fell in love.

2 years fresh (2004-2006).....Back to FW. I rescued a guppy and swordtail my daughter had neglected. So, trash the fish bowl and let's buy them a 20 gallon. While we're into a 20g let's get some tiger barbs, etc. .....Got bored real quick only because I kept remembering my brother's SW tank.

2 years salt (2006-present day) .....Joined 3reef, read quite a bit, marveled at the beautiful tanks shown by the members. Bought myself a 120g.....became addicted and haven't looked back since.

Not so odd J. I only did fresh water for about 6 months before I made the switch. Haven't looked back since. I tried setting up a small freshwater tank up last year but ended up breaking it down after only a few months because the tank bored me so much :)

I think alot of people started freshwater tanks because alot of people say saltwater is so hard to do.. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't easy for me, but nowhere as difficult as alot of people made it out to be.....
