before asking a lot of "why do you want to do this" questions

    http://www.3reef.com/forums/inverts/under-attack-need-advise-72729.html

    that's why;)

i dropped this rock in a bucket of freshwater to kill the sponge.

then it occurred to me, that maybe i could leave the rock in there for X minutes and kill the sponge, but not cause too much die-off that I couldn't just stick the rock back in my tank.

So it's been in the bucket for about 5 minutes.

You think sponge dead, pull it out, scrub it off and stick it back? Or go through entire nuking process?

::) silly me not thinking all the way through...

you can kill sponge by exposing it to air.it might release toxins after it dies

If you can remove the coral that is on the rock... ONce the coral is removed... I would take the rock to the sink runn some water and get a stiff bristled brush and and take some well deserved frustrations out on it.. and litterlay scrubb it clean...

I did that same method to a rock Coverd in Pulsing Zienia "sp" and they never came back...

    Just my $.02

    Best of Luck..

Why would you want to rid of the Pulsing Zienia?

Because Xenia can take over an entire tank. Long after the owner has "removed" it and no longer desires to keep it around.

I still think its cool though. just have to keep on top of it.

I dont know that I fully believe the "expose it to air" idea. I've had various sponges that through one circumstance or another have been exposed to air and been fine. There are many intertidal sponges that are exposed to air for long periods of time through tide changes that survive. I could see if it were deep water or something like that but otherwise you can just scrape it off.

I see that this thread is an old one but since it was revived I figured I'd stick my 2 cents in...

I would donate a powerhead to the cause. They are not fond of strong flow, nor are they fond of toothbrushes. If it were me, I would just scrap the rock.
