It shouldn't go without power for too long because of the heat. In my experience, many fish get stressed out due to the temperature after a couple hours. If you live in an area where you tend to get often power outages that last a long time you should get a battery powered heater and air stone. Other than those two things, it would take a while for a power outage to raise any levels in your tank or harm corals.

when I lived there back in 98 there was a hurricane, that I can't remember the name, my 30g was w/o power for almost 6 days and only lost my flame angel, because I started to do something I read! if it happens to you my best advise will be to have an battery operated air pump and cross your fingers. "DO NOT" mess with it, my buddy in the other hand didn't do a thing to his and all his fish lived

why cant someone come up with some type of solar powered wavemaker or powerhead.... that would be ingenious, heck id buy one just to save electricity.

Depends on the bio load and temps as mentioned already , But if you have a closed top or hod remove that and allow as much of the waters surface to be exposed to air as possible I have had mine to go 8 hrs at 79 to 82 or so with no issues . with 6 to 8 med to med Large tangs and a few other type fish in oh say a 125 gal or 90 gal

a natural gas home generator does the trick. if not then a marine battery can control the temp and O2 level, which would be the main concern. without any outside help any tanks O2 level would drop dependent on the live stock load i.e. corals, fish. either way in less than 24 hours the tanks would need cpr.

here is a quick may do the trick alternative: order some solar panels on line the more panels the better, hook'em up in series, depending on how much voltage you need, get a decent car battery and a power inverter like the ones used that plug on your cig. lighter but a little bigger 500w to 800w output minimum, ok hook your panel leads to the battery and the inverter to the battery, then plug the most important piece of equipment to your tank into the inverter. it has to work! Ok solar panel keeps the car battery charged, while the battery supplies the inverter and the inverter feeds the piece of equipment.
    pretty simple eh!?!
