I won't use UV in a reef system, they inactivate or kill off an important part of the food chain necessary to sustain a system long term.

Now in my fish only systems I swear by them, I am certain a UV helped many of my fish live past 13 years old in a heavily stocked community swim tank which went through all sorts or troubles over the years.

24/7. As some people stated it might be counter productive in a reef system. If you can adjust the flow on it try running a higher flow. This will leave most animals in the water column but help with some bacterial and algae problems.
