I think one per tank is best.
I have 2 in a 55 for 10 months so far, no problems really though.
I've also heard they behave better in groups of odd numbers.

OK, I had to look it up, but I was pretty sure what shoal meant. I was right. Whew.

I have three damsels. In order of size I have a three striped, a yellow tail and a yellow. The Y-T has the left side. The yellow has the right and the humbug goes where he wants, but stays in the center most of the time. This is in a 90g. They do not shoal (see!!!! I used a new word!!!!). They do not get along. They bicker a lot and have their share of domestic disputes.

I think they all need to be the same kind to shoal, or also form a school. By same kind I mean all yellow tails or three stripe ext.

for those that don't know what shoal means
it means when fish hang out in groups.
schooling is when fish hang out in groups and act in a synchronized manner.
so all schools are shoals, but not all shoals are schools
