about 30 inches if its a reef tank, 50 or so if its FO,

i wouldn't recommend going over the number because algae may become a problem.

Impossible to say - it depends on what the fish are. Some fish are very "dirty" and have a high biological load - like eels. Some have almost no biological load - Elacatinus spp. gobies.

There is no set formula. Which ones are you thinking of?

I wouldn't do more than 30 inches tops. Even in a FO tank. I don't do more than 1 inch per 4 gallons myself as a max (23") and currently have only 19" in there now. A low stress tank is a happy tank. It isn't total waste issue that we are dealing with. It is oxygen saturation. There is a very low oxygen saturation in saltwater (about 6ppm). Anything less than 3ppm, the fish fail to respire adequately and start to stress and die. So the range is very narrow.

That's a nice large clown you've got in there! Very nice. Yeah, it depends on the fish IMO. Some great advice given already. Good luck.

Well, I am not really a fan of the "inch" rule. I am a proponent of under stocking as far as fish. Fish, in a reef tank (for me) are adornments to the coral. 4-6 maybe in a 90 and keep them on the small side. Research a lot if you want Tangs which are ich susceptible. If you want to go by the "inch per gallon" rule, most aqurists think that is the beginning size when in reality it must be the ending size. If you buy a 1" fish and it's adult size is 4" you must calculate that fish as 4" not 1".

Good point......but it gives a good idea of what a population should max out at. The end result is definitely important. With me....I got a hippo tang. Clearly, this is going to be too big for my tank if it grows to full size, so I will wait until it gets a few inches bigger and trade it in for another one. That is a game I am willing to play with a few of the fish.
