How many Hermit Crabs?

I was wondering how many hermit crabs should I put in my 55 gallon tank? blue legs,ect?

 

id say none but only because i hate them

 

I used to do 1-2 per gallon

 

I was wondering the same thing, but for my 29g.

I just know you need lots of shells for them & that the red tip hermits are the really bad ones. Though even with shells sometimes they will still go after snails, randomly.

I have one of the reds & 6 blue legs right now. I want some more though.

 

None to very few. I do not use hermits anymore after years of them eating snails, each other, knocking over corals, stealing food.

So many other choices, but I know the popularity of hermits will always be high because they are so comical.

 

They get snails that fall up side down. I once watched one in my tank try to take the shell when it was done eating.

 

ive watched 7 hermits gang up on a turbo snail and ride it along the tank walls picking at its foot until they got him off the glass and could murder him. None used the shell, they are monsters.

 

okay thanks for the imput, I always thought you should have hermit crabs, I didnt know they could be a problem.

 

i thought the same thing sever years ago. The hermits mrdered all the snails for 2 years and eachother. I banished the last few in 2007 to the eel tank where they tried to kill other things and eventually faded into mist. I got ten more for a new tank in march and they lasted until april when banished to my sump. Never again... never again

 

In my 55 gallon i went with 3 turbos, 10 nasarrius snails, and 10 red legs. one of my red legs has evicted a nasarrius snail and now lives in its shell.
