OK so what do you guys think... lets say you have a tank anywhere from 55-75 gallons, it's fish only and you're wanting to make it primarily angel/butterfly/trigger/tangs. how many different species of each would you go with? And in what order would you introduce them to the tank? Thanks for any input!!

Ok a 125 gallon tank, it's a hypothetical, regardless of tank size what i meant was a fairly large tank (suitable of these species). Now that we're past that to better ask the question. The answer i'm looking for may very well be one of each; or maybe 2 of 4 species mentioned. I'm looking more for input and thoughts as to what variety one would maybe choose with these species and what order to introduce them.
    Thanks,
    -Ben

there are so many variables depending on what type of fish you were to put in..that you really can not get an accurate answer.

For example...tangs. There are soo many variety of tangs, each with their own personality. Some tangs stay relatively small and peaceful (kole tang) and some are monsters and can terrorize a tank (clown tang) Same with any other type of fish listed.

Probably best to decide what it is that you are interested in, do some research and plan your tank around your exact plans.

Cool, thanks for the input. Much more helpful than telling me to just get a bigger tank (no offense cuttingras). Seriously no offense meant by that.

After you see 40 or 50 threads with people who have put fish in the wrong size tank and gotten dead fish. Fish that endured being removed from the ocean, packed, flown to the US, unpacked and trucked to a fish store, netted, taken home, and then killed due to the aquarist's inability to read and follow instructions, his response will make complete sense.

i have to agree...if you stick around in the hobby and remain active on these boards for awhile you start to see the same questions by people who have just joined the forum and are new to the hobby. So to be completely honest when i first read your post it initially came off as though you wanted to keep multiple tangs, angels, butterflies etc.. in a 4ft tank. (which is very common amongst those who have just gotten their feet wet in the SW world...myself being no different) However you see these reoccurring motifs after being involved on these forums for a bit of time where you become very quick to just give the standard answer. So, i do know where cuttingrass was coming from because i was about to give the same answer :) Well with that said...
Schackmel i think said it very well! there are so many variables and you have to weed out the things you arent interested in keeping to find the things you are. Then you got to find out which of the things you are interested in keeping are compatible together. Keep going down the line till you finally come to a stock list that is suitable for the aquarium that you have are will obtain. Now here is the tricky part.....NOT ONE PERSON agrees on everything that another person does in this hobby so get use to getting different answers to the same question! For exaple...and to partially answer a part of your question...Many people will tell you that you cant keep two angels in the same tank with out one killing the other or both killing each other. I personally have two angels in the same tank with no aggression what so ever between the two. So, when it comes to stocking (in respect to agression and the order in which to introduce them to the system) a lot has to do with the individual personality of the fish. Just how some pit bulls are nasty and you cant get near them where others are the most docile animals walking the earth.

What I do is I have a dream tank in mind. I then watch the posts and when someone has a tank about the size of what I want I check to see if they list what they have....sometimes they have the whole layout of there tank in their signature. If not just ask them to post what they got and 9 times out of 10 they will, then I have a file on my computer with a TON of notes.
I think you can get a ton of info by just sitting back and taking notes, then when you are ready to start your build you can say hey this is what I'm thinking about and break out your list. Well that's what im doing I hope that helps from a new guys perspective.
