Use 60 degree lenses and you should be fine.

    Hey Saintsfan,
I am also looking to get the DIY kit.
My question is how do you plan on mounting them, and any sort of protective housing?

40 degree would penetrate better, unless you do not want SPS near the bottom. Probably 125 to 150, 40 deg 3W LEDs should be good though.

well you have to buy a heatsink...

on the heatsink, ill mount the leds to it, then mount them to the canopy, im gonna mount the ballast on the back of my canopy..and my apex controller allows me to dim and control the leds color...

my question is if i got 90 of them, and with my two islands scape, would i be ok growing sps on the tops of my two islands, maybe 20" from the leds..

    with 60degree optics

When I built my LEDs for my 125 I used all cree 3w. 72 white with 65 degree lenses and 72 blue with 80 degree lenses. I cannot run the lights any more then 50$ or stuff starts to bleach so these lights are really strong. if you want to save a couple of bucks you can go with a lot less LEDs with just wider angles such as 80 degrees.

ok so you have 144 leds

if i got 90 leds at 60degree optix, and ran them at 100%, i should be pretty good then...

i have a lot of friends that use cree leds, and they say the same thing you said, its almost like they wish they werent as powerful because they cant get anywhere close to running them full.. most of them have all told me to get the 3watt bridglux since they arent as strong...

the only thing that gonna be growing on the bottom of the tank is zoas, brains, acans, mushrooms, and a superman monti.....and maybe some gsp...

regardless what lighting i had, i would always have sps towards the top...even if my lighitng was enough to grow it at the bottom, i just like tanks with sps up top for some reason..
