So I have been texting and driving for a long time, and when I had my black berry 3 years ago it wasnt a big deal because I could watch the road and text without looking. However using swype on a touch screen phone I am not that skilled and I know that it is dangerous to myself and others around me. So I started hunting down android apps that could fix this problem. I tried drivesafe.ly, vlingo, and a lot of other major apps. I then stumbled upon Jarvis. This app is a free app and if you want a few extra functions I think its like $3 dollars. Substantially cheaper than any of the other pay text to speech apps. It works great on my Droid Razr. I recommend everyone gives it a try and saves a life. Oh and by the way it was developed by one guy.

A pox on you and all who do text and drive. It is extremely dangerous and reckless. It is also becoming illegal in more and more states. Mine is one thank God.

Before you put your judgement on me I avoid it currently, and this is why I am posting a alternative to all who do. This is a application designed to prevent people from doing it and save lives.
Also if you think that making it illegal in states stops youth from texting you are mistaken, but providing a solution does prevent it in many cases.

it doesnt matter how many laws they make they are still going to do it and people will continue to die. there are not many solutions to this but of course this app may help a bit.

I am glad to hear you are not texting and have found an app to help prevent it.

Laws will not prevent texting from occurring but will limit the number of folks texting. Penalties need to strengthened to the same level as drunk driving since studies have shown that texters and cell phone users have a slower reaction time than drunk drivers.

And I agree that it is unsafe hence my encouragement for use of this type of application. I hope anyone who does text and has a smartphone will give it a try instead of picking up the phone in the car to answer a text message. Trying to spread the word since I just found it recently and it has worked great on my device.

All android phones come with a app built in that should do this and there is a walkie talkie app that MANY!!!!! people need. Tired of almost getting my subie messed up cause some people cant drive and talk even if there on bluetooth.

Illegal here and daughter got a BIG ole ticket she had to pay all by herself. It seems loosing money teaches better than parental lectures..... maybe I need to introduce monetary punishment on the children.... Hmmmm.... more money for the hobby and an upside if you have really rotten kids :)

But I digress. I still can't believe the number of people who haven't gone bluetooth and are still trying to put the phone up to their ear while hiding it so the cops don't see.... that leads to some crazy driving in itself.

Eating and driving should be illegal too. There's no way so you be able to drive with a bucket of chicken with sides in your passenger seat that is being watched more than the road. Have you ever seen anyone drive with a footlong sandwich.... lord help us. The people are crazy drivers in Los Angeles.

    And I digress again...lol.

Even if you don't get an App like this, pull over when you want to text. There is NO reason to do it. Life hasn't gotten that important in the last 5 years that we can't stop yacking.

Will making it illegal stop people? no. Just look at DUI (both drugs and alcohol). Truthfully I think the tickets and so forth are there to give the commong person that first offense wake up call.

Some of the places I've been stationed at had several different approaches: fines, 30 day loss of driving privledges (first offense), and my favorite showing up on a Saturday in your dress uniform (with you boss in thier uniform as well) to attend safe driving classes. Nothing has a bigger effect than taking away peoples time.

Yes I did say driving privledges cause driving is a privledge.

Actually, being illegal has stopped people. Same as the seatbelt law really. I think everyone pretty much wears their seatbelt now-a-days. There will always be those that never will. No law will stop everyone from doing anything. No law will save The Stupids from themselves. But enough tickets to enough people over time will reduce the habit.... but there will always be people who have blow up dolls in the passenger seats in the Diamond Lanes. Cest la vie.
