IME, the target mandarins do better in smaller tanks... the other mandarins are more hit or miss... just make sure you get one that is FAT in the store... never had luck keeping a "skinny" one.

ok... trust me though, the targets are easier to keep... I've had two and they both got chubby and lived long times... I have not had success keeping the other kind of mandarin long term. This is in a 55 and 120 gallon...

Is there a specific reason? Is it just the personality of the two fish?

I think that the targets are just a bit smaller, so they do better in smaller tanks.

And from my research, better at accepting other types of food, though my targets have always only eaten pods.

Ok I will DEFINATELY have to take this into considerstion. I do have a while to make my decision though because I have to work on getting an extreme amount of pods in my tank. Thanks for the advice!

I see all these great suggestions but not one of them will help if you do not feed them. You can use Live Phyto like DT's or my favorite Phyto2 or you can use Phyto paste but they do much better with the live.

While they do not need Phyto to live they will not only reproduce much faster if feed Phyto they will also be much more nutritious when eaten if they are feed something like Nannochloropsis sp. or Isochrysis sp.

I know it's not the norm but my mandarin eats frozen food and has ever since I got him. I've even seen him eat sinking pellets. I've had him for about 3 years now. I was new to keeping fish when I got him and completely lucked out since I had not done any research on them when I got him. Good luck with your purchase
