How many snails would be good for a 55 gallon reef?

ask them and take their advise. Fill out the form.

As a point of reference, I have around 200 snails (6 different species) in my 55 DT.

The vast majority of my snails are dwarf ceriths. (well over half)

Order anything but dwarf ceriths, they are horrible. Make your take look ugly.

Get yourself 25 astrea snails and 25 florida certh snails. That would be a good start.

infamous gives this experience out from time to time - IMO, infamous's experience with these snails is the exception and not the norm.

dwarf ceriths are some of my primary cleaners - they do most of the work of the CuC. I would actually say whatever you get, make sure you have a good amount of them as dwarf ceriths.

No idea what infamous means about them making your tank look ugly?

Anyway - apparently some folks don't like them, but I think they're one of the most important snails in the CuC.

It's up to you if you want to try them - and it's good you're finding out we don't all agree ;)

I gotta agree with Peredhil on this one. I dont even see my dwarf ceriths during the day. The only time I see them is when I check out my tank at night with the flashlight. If I havent run the mag for a day or so, I can see their trails....usually thats just a reminder to me to run the mag. LOL!

Dont listen to these guys. :loco:

These snails are so tiny, they are black so they look like little drops of poop on your sand. They dont do anything Just a waste of money. If you have a sump system, they'll end up in your sump or get sucked into the skimmer.

You never see them because they do so little. Most of the will die off or get eaten by even the smallest crabs.

    Worst snails ever. :idea2:

For the record, I disagree with every point in this post. Well, they are tiny and generally black, that's true :)

I have had one in my skimmer before. one. I have had 3 nerites and a blenny in there too though... (my skimmer happens to be HOB).

I don't see mine during the day very much. At night, they coming pouring out of the substrate (i.e. stirring it) and cover my glass.

Best snails of them all IMO for general reef cleaning.

I also have a bunch of dwarf planaxis that I really rarely see. But seeing them doesn't have anything to do with how effective they are.

Also, for the record...this "guy" is a gal ;D

Seriously, though, I do like the dwarf cerith snails and have not seen one in my sump yet. I had a pistol shrimp clog up my skimmer , but never a snail. I also think they are one of the best cleaners out there.

But we all have our own experiences and opinion.
