Length over total gallons when it comes to tangs is the normal rule so they can put a bit of run before they have to stop or make a turn. Usually a 4 foot tank is considered as short as you should go with juveniles. 6 foot is as short as you should go with adults.

I'm going to break with what's likely to be the popular opinion on this one, and say you could probably do any tang that would go into a 75, or possibly 2. The diagonal on a 36" x 36" tank is 50", which is about as much as the length of a 75 (48"). The waste from the tangs shouldn't be an issue as they would in a 75 due to the extra gallonage, which is why I say maybe 2.

I would just make sure to aquascape so that there's a decently open path along that diagonal. With 2 tangs, I'd make sure both diagonals are open.

I agree with what you are saying about the extra depth adding swimming room. My tank being 30" deep makes it have more room than a 180 has for swimming, despite it being about 10" shorter than a 180g. I still wouldn't put a tang that would get 14" long in the OP's cube though( orange shoulder).
