Well, you may want to buy some empty (saltwater) hermit crab shells (Florida Cerith snail shells work well). They are killing your snails because they are too big for their current shells, so, they're stealing larger ones (and they don't care if it's occupied as they will forcefully remove it's current occupant).

I ordered my cleaning crew from reefcleaners.org, and the 10 hermits I bought ate the 10 florida ceriths I bought, as they seemed to be the most vulnerable :(

I had 4 turbos and 10 nassarius. And went to reef scavengers and they suggested I get 20 dwarf ceriths and 15 Florida dwarf ceriths.

I agree with Tangster on the number of snails, most people have too few. I personally don't like hermits and won't buy any. I know a lot of people have success with them but I don't want something in my tank that might eat my snails just for a shell. You don't have to have hermits to keep your tank in order.

If you keep plenty of old shells in the tank the crabs will be less inclined to murder the snails for room and board. I have about ??? 8 or 12 hermits in this tank But I put about 400 snails total in there I need about that many again once I get get back up and able to work and getting them together.

Excellent link! I have been wondering about a decent clean up crew!
