    It depends on the pump.

You want the surface of the media to be bubbling (just like you were boiling water). Some people do this by putting a ball valve on the pump and other people do this by more or less media.

If your looking for how much to use for what volume of system water, check out Seachem's Phosguard direction for use. They state: "Use 250 mL (~1 cup) for every 300 L (75 gallons*)." for their product.

    Their website: Seachem. PhosGuard

It depends on the reactor, for the TLF phosreactor...they say no more than 5" of media in the reaction chamber or 200g of media...the bubbling thing that inwall mentioned is more for carbon i believe (i read this someplace) but for a phosphate remover (GFO), they say the stuff should be tumbling around the chamber. can anyone back me up...honestly Trent, i'm not exactly 100% sure...but i'm just going by from what I hear. It makes sense to me.

In my P04/Carbon reactor, the "brown" media looks like it is boiling... while there is no visible movement of the carbon...

Thats makes sense and from videos that i have watched the GFO is tubling in the chamber, its like grubbsj said it looks to be boiling.

One more question, how often would/do you change out the media??

You would change out the media when it's "used up" You can tell this by testing water to see when it looses it's effectiveness.

KOgle's comments is almost word for word what Seachem has in their directions... when testing shows that the PO4 level is starting to go up...
