Hey all Im about to upgrade to my 40 gallon breeder and need to purchase some powerheads for it. I do keep waving hand coral and going to go for some more sps. I have seen suggestions as low as 10x tank volume and as high as 50x for flow. I plan on a pump on each side. How much flow should I have....800 gph?

I just got my first SPS this weekend, but from everything I've read more is better when it comes to flow. I have a 40b with 2 koralia 750's (1500gph) for 37.5 volume turnover.

40x is recomended for sps but it also depends on type of flow. If you can get a wave going, the whole volume of the aquarium is moving regardless if the pumps rating is only 500gph.

For a 40 breeder I would go with 2 Vortech MP 10W ES's. With the two pumps, one would be made a master and the other a slave, and then have them work in anti synch mode against each other for some nice random, broad flow patterns.

And I know a lot of people will say Vortechs cost too much money but it is much better to bite the bullet up front and have quality products that are proven to last.

Take me for example, I originally started with 4 Koralia 4's (around $240 from LFS), then upgraded to the adjustable Koralias on a Koralia wavemaker (around $650 online), and now have finally made my way to Vortechs. If I would have just taken the plunge from the beginning I would have saved almost a grand on equipment I sold for less than half.

Plus, the vortechs can be used on a larger tank (when I upgrade) and hold their resale value better than most other pieces of equipment in the hobby.

Thanks for the info, I have been looking on ebay and I seen some really good deals almost too good and of courss they are all knocker off brands. Does any one have any experience with these off brands? I know they probly wont been the best or may not have the max flow but I just can not justify spending over 100 on a powerhead that just moves water.

I agree dont skimp on stuff like a skimmer or lights cause you need quality but a powerhead just cant see how one can cost so much.

I found two 800 gph for $36, they swivel around and look just like theach more expensive models
