How much flow for my Refugium?/I'm getting a fish room.

I found out that I got my new place(4bed room, 2bath, and 600sqFt of unfinished basement). So you know what that means FISH ROOM. I have a extra 40bdr in my basement right now I think I wanna set it up as a gravity return Refugium. My question is how much flow should I be directing up their?

 

I always set my refugiums size by the system its going to support I use the 10% method I try to keep my refugiums total volume at 10% to the main system then ,I flow 10% of the fuges total volume through the fugh per Hr. Been using this method for better part of 25 yrs with first algae scrubbers then I used it as a base starting point for the refugiums when we first started to bring them along and its the best combination I could find so I keep using it..
I see guys now putting 100 gallon refugiums on 50 gallon main systems LOL and then now I see idiots starting to spout the need to pre filter and even most recently to even skim the the water before sending it to the plants in the old swamp LOL. Aquarium Gods just can't stand simple LOL

 

I mainly want to add more volume to my system.

I have a home made 10 gal fuge on my 110, and flow about 180gph of raw unfiltered water through it. It seems to do the job very nicely. I literally have to prune back the macros weekly, so I assume they are doing their job. I've NEVER had even the tiniest bit of detectable Nitrates.

 

Then add a large sump!

 

But anything bigger won't fit under my stand.

 

I thought in your post you said you was getting a fish room....:-/ Put the sump in there and not under the tank. I have a 75 gal sump with 30 gal fuge set in a closet next to my tank. The only thing that is under the tank is the closed loop OM valve and two pumps.

 

True. Dur. For somereason I got it stuck in my head that a sump has to be below the tank.
