I know this gets asked alot and I know the answer is usually very little flow. I have a 20 long fuge. DSB with some chaeto and small pieces of live rock. It is fed by a tee on one of my overflows. I had the ball valve just barely open and it looks like the water is hardly moving at all. Is this too little flow?? Do I want to open up that valve a little more. Also this will take away the flow going to my sump. Does that really matter??

Results will vary, b/c all systems are not created equal. I have a Mag18 as a return pump on mine not T'ed off and running straight through my refug at around 1000ghp. I have 0 Nh3, No2 and No3. Luna

I have a fuge in one of my sumps (2 tanks tied together) and it's getting about 1000 gph. My ball of chaeto (about the size of a softball when I placed it in there) has doubled in size in the last month and I'm getting ready to harvest some of it.

I run 1/10 of the size of the display tank. Example: 100g tank= 10 gph across it. You have to give time for the nutrients to settle out of the water and the algae to pick it up. I run calurpa in mine though.

I run at 1/10 as well (the Rodger method) - works like a charm !

I have cheato, calupra and that red stuff that I can't recall its name.

Crimson Ghost, the red stuff is probably Gracillaria!
I also employ a slow flow of water through my refugium housing caulerpa, live sand, rock and my buddy Calypso(Royal Gramma) who resides and calls home this small piece of my reef system. My refugium is only about 4 gallons but he loves it and has all the comforts of hom, besides when he was in my main tank he would get abused to the point that he eventually would die! So we have become good friends, so to speak as I saved his life!!!
