I just received my shipment from BRS: a couple of Phosban 150 reactors, maxi jet 400's and a jug of GFO. My question is how much do I initially use? I have heard to cut in half the recommended manufacturers recommendation. I have also heard 1 table spoon per x gallons? Can someone who has tested this product please help with recommendations? Thanks

I would use no more than 1/4 of BRS's suggestion for starters and no more than 1/2 once everything is settled in.

DO NOT I repeat DO NOT use the BRS calculator!!!
For some unknown reason the recommend TWICE the amount of any other vendor and it will cause bleaching.

Full dose is 10 grams per 10 gallons of system water or about one level tablespoon full.
You should start with 1/2 that amount for the first several weeks or months and slowly work up to the full dose over time if you feel it is needed. Personally I run 1/2 dose at all times and have never had an issue, kind of an insurance policy. My phosphates are undetectable and I have a 8+ year old 5-6" deep DSB that has never been cleaned or touched in its entire life.

Good to know. I just started using BRS suggested amount and I now have an algae outbreak. I've had an issue with algae before.

Another question: How much flow do I need coming from a maxi 400? The Phosban 150 comes with a ball valve but should I have her crancked full throddle or half way? The GFO seems to be just jumping around at the bottom of the reactor. The manual states that it should be floating around the top?

    Thanks

Actually the manual says the top surface of the media should be slightly tumbling or boiling. It does not need to be lifted to the top of the reactor, just so whatever amount you have has a slight boiling action on its surface. You will want the ball valve at least partially closed depending on the amount of media you are using and the flow rate it takes to tumble.
