how much harm could a little tap water do?

The key to this entire thread is you never know the condition of the tap water. You have absolutely zero control over it so have no idea if its good bad or indifferent. Running it through a carbon filter removes the chlorine but leaves all the TDS behind as well as things like nitrates, phosphates and silicates not to mention ammonia if your water is chloraminated. Does your utility add phosphates for corrosion control? Do the use chlorine or chloramines? Do you even know what they do?
Thats the problem, you never know. Why chance it? Use RO/DI and you never have that lingering doubt in the back of your mind if a problem is water quality related or not.

I have never used anything but Tap water... I use Novaqua Plus to condition it and have it filtered and circulating for a day before I put it in the tank. My tank is a FOWLR though...although I do have one Ric that has tripled in size in the last 3 months.

Hard to believe a little bit of tap for a top off could have such a drastic effect in that big of a system.

thanks AZ, thats what I was trying to get at. just sharing my experience so others dont make the same incorrect assumption I did. absolutely nothing changed at all besides the tap water top off, nothing was moved or stirred up, or anything like that. everything else in the tank is doing great, including a very temperamental yellow toadstool . . . its so odd that the anemone split and my favorite frogspawn is doing so poorly all of a sudden when everything else seems fine.

what if you were to use tap water that you get from freezer like you know how you would have a section on your for crushed ice cubed and water, it would take forever to fill but would that water be safe to use since it's just coming from ice

Making ice does not remove any contaminants, not sure where you are coming from with this? Its still tap water.
