How much live rock do you add at one time

Hi there, I have a 20 gallon low boy with live sand and approx 8 lbs of live rock. Also have 3 hermits and 2 snails and 2 clowns. It is approx 2 months old. How much can I add at one time can I go out and jus buy 15lbs of live rock and throw it in there or do 5 here 5 there? Also will that help drop my nitrates that are lingering around 20-30ppm

 

If you have an established tank, then you want to cure the rock so it does not produce ammonia before you put it in the tank.

 

Why don't you buy some dry rock and just add bacteria to seed the rock. You save money and it will raise your bacteria colony. The live rock you have will help with covering the dry rock in coraline algae. Just an opinion.

If you purchase the live rock locally and keep it damp on the way home you can just add it. If you order live rock that is in shipping for couple days it will have to be cured. If you use dry rock I would just place it in a tub and cure it useing water removed from tank at water changes for a few weeks.

 

I.M.O That 23lbs isn't going to be enough live rock to maintain a healthy tank...Its good to have at least 2 lbs per gallon...Id shoot for 40lbs...
