The general rule of thumb is 1-2lbs per gallon. If you want just the best filtration possible just put as much as you can shove in their.

I see what Urban is trying to say...however I have to disagree!
If you end up with too much live rock...it will actually hinder your tanks ability to remain stable and under ideal water parameters IMO!!!
If you have too much live rock in your tank what you are doing is hindering the ability of your rock to do a yoeman job of filtering due to the excess amount of detritus that can accumulate in between the live rock with improper adequate water flow.
The other thing is that with too much live rock accounting for the space on your substrate, you will end up with advection and diffusion causing an over accumulation of detritus under your live rock in your substrate area causing water parameter and gas exchange issues in your substrate!

Since its such a small tank, go with 5 pounds or something...

I have LR from three different sites and feel that there is tremendous variables when I comes to quality. Some of my LR that are smaller and very pores and more “live” and contributes much more that just large pieces (less pores) that are less efficient. Its quality versus quantity IMO.

The more porous rock is more desireable and beneficial as their is more surface area for which organisms and bacteria can adhere to!!! Throw the 1-2 pounds of rock per gallon of water out the window as that is old news!!! A deep sand bed is more beneficial than alot of live rock!!!!! Too much live rock will cause you to have a huge detritus buildup inder your rock, unless you are able to raise the rock of the substrate by use of eggcrate or similar approach!
