True that! I would not believe a word out of orphek. Especially when their claims couldnt be backed by our testing.

Here are a few articles in the first post of this thread. I suggest reading each one OP: http://www.3reef.com/forums/coral/how-color-up-your-corals-71882.html

This would be a more accurate graph of your point

This comment struck a nerve with me, Im sorry but there are a lot of people on this forum with light years of experience. A few people like Dingo, Evolved, and Gcarrol, and Thatgrimguy all have some very good expertise in lighting and if youve read throughout their points they will all give you very good realistic information just as Gcarrol did. Its not fair for you to accuse him of being angry and causing a fight because he's providing you with more correct information to your post.

Search Gcarrols posts and you will find some of the most civilized and intellectual of conversations on this board. And check out his tank, its beautiful.

It's hard to judge emotion from a persons post short of the use of caps, profanity, and punctuation to support it. Many times I am often misinterpreted. I find it best to perceive emotion with a grain of salt when you can neither hear nor see the person posting.

Other than that thank you guys for the information. I always look forward to soaking it in like a sponge daily.

This is a bit off topic..but if your corals begin to bleach from your LEDs being too strong, is that typically because of the blues or the whites or both? I ask because I have a dimmable Taotronic leds (I know they are not the best) and a few of my corals were beginning to bleach. My reaction was to turn down the whites a bit but I'm not sure if that is the right way to go. If this is too much of a hijack let me know and I will start my own thread. TIA

That is a great question, I hope someone will chime in with a answer.

Hard to say really. I don't know if there has ever been a study into what spectrum of light could cause bleaching fastest. I believe in almost all cases the bleaching is more of a result of change than the intensity though. Spectrum shifts or par shift is tough on a coral. Bleaching, ime, seems to come most from the change in light. Either by changing the intensity or the spectrum. Especially when changing light sources to something different. So go slow with changes, and let them settle in before making another change.

I bleached a few corals when I first started on leds, but now run my lights at nearly 100% across the board (save for the light blue because it makes the tank look too windex for my liking) I took my sweet time building up the intensities.

well I must admit I started the corals too high in the tank I think. I now make sure to start all new corals on the bottom and move them up. I guess I'm just unsure of the best way to utilize dimmable leds and which lights are "stronger" per se. What you are saying about intensity makes sense though

I ended up making my frag tank a light acclimation area. I just move the coral around in there so by the time I'm ready to mount it, I can put it where I please. But not everyone will have this ability. I find that magnet mounted frag racks that you can raise weekly are another good option for acclimating corals.
