How much sand to use???

    I am setting up a 55gal. Tank and I want a 4’’ sand bed. About how many pounds of sand will I need?


    Ps. I am using play sand

    I had 40 pounds of pool filter sand in a 75 gallon tank that put a 2-3" layer on the bottom. I'd say 30-35 lbs should do it.

    where'd you get your 50 lb bags from? ive been looking for a good source in illinois preferably for large amounts of sand

    oh i didnt see the first time... you said playsand. i consider mixing 50% playsand, 25% aragonite, and 25% crushed coral for my bed to give some diversity.

    i use high desert play sand from home depot very cheap works great 5 bucks a bag

    my question is, why in the world do you want a 4 inch sand bed??? If you are going to have any sort of sifter in there you are looking at trouble. With deep sand you get sulfer pockets. As soon as one of those sifters digs into one of those sulfer pockets, you got issues.
