How Much Top Off Water A Day Does Everyone Use?

Well this is just kind of a curiosity question for me, basically because I wanted to see if my tanks evaporating a lot of water every day, cuz it sure seems like it is!! Lol

My tank is a 125 FOWLR open top, and a 40 gallon breeder sump that's actually on a very short stand to the side of the DT, not under it, and that's also got an open top. The reason for the sump being next to the tank and not under it, is because my under my stand is very oddly shaped and would've only been able to fit about a 20 gallon long in there...

Anyways... I'm topping off at about a gallon, maybe a little more, every day. Is this a lot for the tank size?? How much does everyone else top off, and what size tank is it??

all depends on the humidity of your house. my tank evaporates about 1.25 gallons a day

 

Among other things, including a glass top, encouraging evap by blowing a fan on water, or even a powerhead towards the surface, etc. I honestly have no idea how much my 55 with 30 gal sump uses, as my ATO reservoir is auto filled. However, my glass top 46 BF (no sump) uses maybe a gallon every 3-4 weeks. Meanwhile, my glass covered 10 gal with a HOB filter (made for dual bio-wheels) and a skimmer uses about a gallon a week! This is mostly due to the HOB filter, and the way it discharges water on top of the surface, vs. into the tank water.

Mines hectic and does about 2g a day. I think... As I dont have an ATO atm.

40 gallon breeder open, with a 20 gallon refugium. I loose about a gallon a day.

 

29 gallon with a mostly covering glass top (stepped on it, broke 1/3 of one side panel lol). I go through a bit more than a gallon a week. I like alot of surface disturbance though, aiming a powerhead toward surface.
