Ok so I am starting my saltwater tank all over again, and this time the proper way. I had a lot of green algae growing on my 30 gal plexi tank, I couldn't get it off with the tank cleaner brush, so I remembered I had some plastic steel wool. I doubt it will do any harm to the plexi because of the water acting as a lube...WRONG..I was staring at the tank this morning and thought it was on the outside from me spilling saltwater. I brought the cleaner out to clean the outside. And soon I realized that it was from the inside cleaning. Now my tank has a blurred appearance to it as you look through it. I feel like a total ass for doing this now. I also need to figure out do i want to buy another or deal with it. Just had to share my stupidity ;D

its Ok. though acrylic tanks are VERY delicate.. and No one one should use abrasive materials to clean it...

Sorry ' that cost you BIG time...my friend.. (imo) glass is the only way to go !

yep I think I will check the LFS out tomorrow for a glass tank. Another horror story about plexi is you have maybe a 12in opening in the back and one whole.

Man, I feel for you as that is one bad event. Lesson learned though, I guess..
Unfortunately, this will undoubtably NOT be your last pitfall, but if we learn from these mistakes, it will just make us that much better as a dedicated and conscientious marine aquarist!
    Good luck to you!

a credit card or a plastic paint spatula works great on acrylic with algae and doesnt scratch. glass will also scratch with sand or live rock but not as easily as acrylic
